How to become a Personal Stylist: Tips from Chic & Classy Image Consulting

             Well hello there bombshells!! I am Khalilah, pronounced like Delilah with a "K". Most people call me KJ. I am an independent image consultant or what others would call a wardrobe stylist and the owner of Chic & ClassyImage Consulting.

             In the past I have written my own blogs Khalilah's Kloset and Dolled Up For The Day. These blogs prompted readers to inquire about my outfits where to purchase and if they could actually purchase things from my closet. Fast-forward two years and I launched my website Chic & Classy Image Consulting presents Khalilah's Kloset (chic and classy image.com). This site combines my image consulting services as well as my resell items from my personal closet for purchase.

             
Today I would like to give some tips or pointers for those who are interested or have ever considered becoming a personal stylist. If you are a person who wins best-dressed contest or are stopped several times throughout the day and complimented on your wardrobe you may consider becoming a personal stylist. Clearly, you have what it takes!! This is a very interesting business because it is a kind of trial and error process. Hence, my decision to provide the tips and pointers I have come across over the years.

             First off I would say be genuinely nice. You would think it goes without saying however, it must be said. How many times have you seen a well-dressed woman and thought that she seemed a little cold, stuck up or standoffish? Don't play up that stereotype! The majority of the personal stylists I know are genuinely sweet people. As a matter of fact they work in the community, volunteer and are just positive optimistic people all around. Your clothing should be an icebreaker not a wall. The next tip I would provide is brand yourself. It is very important that you look the part. Have you ever heard the saying never trust a skinny chef? Well there you go! Why on earth would someone hire you to help with their image if you go out in public looking like who done it and what for? You never get a second chance to make a first impression!

             My third tip would be to make sure you learn and develop your skills continuously take courses on marketing, textiles, textures, body composition, color, trends, read fashion magazines, watch fashion shows, etc. Fourth, you have to learn to network! Go to various events not only those fashion related but those that are not, such as seminars, workshops, the theater, charity events, etc. You never know who you could meet or who you can establish a mutually beneficial relationship with. Lastly, stay true to yourself and your vision. Trust your instincts...they've gotten you this far!
